Despite its imposing height, Mam Tor is a relatively easy hill to climb, however, especially from the National Trust car park at Mam. Mam Tor, literally meaning Mother Hill, stands at 517 m high and towers over Castleton. Making your way gradually to the top you get lots of great views over the countryside both sides. The best views are available from Mam Tor in the Peak District and the Great Ridge, rising high above the Hope Valley. Most of the cliff edge is unfenced but it's safe to walk along the paths that cross through the area. There are view points along the way which are fenced so that you're safe whilst looking out and down on the valley below. It's a bit of an uphill path through the grassy area alongside the cliff edge but well worth it. High Tor retreat is nestled in the hillside of the famous Matlock Bath in the peak district.
